Following 150 years as a British colony, Malta gained state independency in 1964, became a republic in 1974 and later joined the European Union in 2004. During its time as a British Colony English became an official language
Although Malta is now an independent state, and has been for several years, English still remains an official language, second after Maltese. According to the Eurobarometer poll conducted in 2012, 98% of Maltese people can speak Maltese and 88% can speak English.
The Maltese Islands are located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, 93 km south of Sicily and 300 km north of Libya.
The archipelago is made up of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, plus the tiny uninhabited islets of Cominetto in the north and Fifla, about 5km off the southern coast.
